Manchester City fans threw hundreds of bright yellow bananas at Liverpool supporters during their 3-0 victory at Anfield on Sunday, sparking a chaotic scene. The protest followed the Premier League’s guilty verdict against the club for financial wrongdoing. Ten people were arrested, and a police officer suffered a serious facial injury during the clash.
The banana throwing was part of a broader inflatable protest, with fans also bringing other unusual items to the match. The action was a response to the league’s decision, which has led to widespread anger among fans. Gary Neville, a former Manchester United player, has called for a break from covering City games, citing the “huge cloud” over the league.
The incident highlights the growing tensions surrounding the club, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi-based Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. Critics have accused the club of “sportswashing,” using football to improve its international image. The controversy has also drawn attention to the broader geopolitical ties between the UK and the UAE.
The match itself saw Manchester City’s trio of Haaland, Doku, and Cherki score after a red card for Liverpool’s Gravenberch. Despite the victory, fans have been criticized for not showing enough sadness, with some calling them “sad clowns.” The situation has intensified calls for stricter punishment against the club, with some arguing the Premier League’s reputation is at risk.
