Schools across Scotland were closed on Tuesday as the Met Office issued a yellow wind warning covering the entire country for 18 hours. The decision affected over 300 educational institutions, with local authorities advising parents to keep children at home. The warning, which was also extended to parts of Northern Ireland, was triggered by strong winds expected to hit the region.
The closure was part of a broader response to the weather alert, which was issued ahead of the storm system expected to pass through the UK. The Met Office warned that wind speeds could reach up to 70 mph in some areas, prompting the Scottish government to take precautionary measures. Transport services were also disrupted, with some train and bus routes canceled.
This is the second time this month that schools in Scotland have been closed due to weather conditions. The last closure occurred after a similar wind warning was issued in early September. The Scottish government has previously emphasized the importance of keeping schools open as much as possible, but has also acknowledged the need for safety in extreme weather.
The current warning follows a period of unsettled weather across the UK, with several regions experiencing heavy rain and strong winds. The Met Office has advised the public to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The situation is being closely monitored, with updates expected throughout the day.
