A Spanish footballer has died following a cardiac arrest caused by a collision during a match. Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for Tenerife, collapsed in hospital after being struck in the chest by the goalkeeper of FC Andorra, Jesus Owono, during a game on Monday. The incident occurred near the halfway line as de Miguel challenged for the ball. Owono was shown a red card for the collision, which resulted in his knee striking de Miguel in the chest.
The player’s club confirmed his death on Tuesday. Medical reports indicate de Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest as a direct consequence of the impact. Spanish police have launched an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the incident. The authorities are examining whether the collision met the legal criteria for such charges.
This is the second fatality in the Spanish football league this season. In March, a player from Real Betis died after a similar on-field collision. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter safety protocols in football matches. The Spanish Football Federation is currently reviewing its guidelines on player safety and collision prevention. The case is expected to be closely monitored by both legal and sporting authorities.
