Storm Boelo, the second named storm of the 2024 Atlantic season, struck Scotland with winds reaching up to 84mph. The storm caused significant damage, including power outages affecting more than 25,000 households. SSEN, the Scottish electricity distribution company, reported that many customers were still awaiting reconnection as of early Monday.
The storm followed Storm Austen, which impacted southern England and parts of Wales earlier in the week. Boelo brought strong gusts to Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, leading to widespread disruption. Over 25,000 homes were left without power, with some areas experiencing prolonged outages.
This is the second named storm of the season, marking an early and intense start to the Atlantic storm cycle. The Met Office has warned that the UK may face further weather disruptions in the coming days. The storm also resulted in one fatality, with a man killed in an incident linked to the severe weather. Emergency services reported multiple incidents across the affected regions, including fallen trees and flooded roads.
The storm has raised concerns about the increasing frequency of severe weather events in the region. Officials are monitoring the situation closely, with efforts ongoing to restore power and assess the full extent of the damage.
