Former British number one Johanna Konta has raised concerns over the disqualification of Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev during the China Open, suggesting the incident may have been accidental rather than intentional. Konta, a former top-ranked player, questioned whether Medvedev had deliberately hit the ball at a spectator or if it was an unintentional act.
The incident occurred during a match between Medvedev and British player Kyle Edmund. According to reports, Medvedev struck a ball that hit a fan in the crowd, leading to his immediate disqualification. Tournament officials cited the rule against hitting a spectator as the reason for the penalty.
This is not the first time Medvedev has faced controversy over on-court conduct. In 2021, he was fined for hitting a ball toward a spectator during a match in Dubai. While the rules clearly state that players must avoid hitting spectators, the line between accidental and intentional actions remains blurred.
Konta’s comments highlight ongoing debates about how to handle such incidents in professional tennis. Officials often rely on player statements, but in this case, Medvedev did not immediately comment on the incident. The situation has sparked discussions about the need for clearer guidelines on on-court behavior.
