A man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for blowing up a traffic camera in southeast London. Kevin Rees, 37, was found guilty of damaging property and endangering public safety after he detonated an explosive device near a ULEZ camera in Sidcup in December 2023. The attack caused damage to vehicles and buildings over 100 meters away.
Rees was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with causing criminal damage and public nuisance. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing the device was specifically targeted at the camera, which is part of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone enforcement system. The court heard that the explosion created a safety hazard and disrupted traffic monitoring in the area.
This is the second known case in London involving the targeting of traffic enforcement technology. In 2022, a similar incident occurred in Barking, where a device was used to damage a speed camera. Authorities have since increased security measures around such systems. The case highlights ongoing concerns about vandalism targeting traffic control infrastructure.
