A pensioner was banned from Facebook Marketplace after her ornamental bird bath was flagged as a weapon by the platform's automated system. Jayne Ross, 68, said the situation was "ridiculous" and that she was unable to resolve the issue despite multiple attempts to contact Meta's AI assistant.
Ross claimed she was unable to reach a human representative to review her case, despite repeated efforts. The bird bath, which she intended to sell, was automatically classified as an item that could be used for harmful purposes. The system did not allow her to provide clarification or appeal the decision.
This incident highlights the challenges of automated content moderation systems, which can misidentify harmless items as potential threats. Ross is now seeking a resolution, but the process remains unclear. The case has sparked discussions about the need for more nuanced algorithms that can distinguish between everyday items and actual weapons.
