UK's MI5 chief has warned that Iran is targeting military sites in the UK, including a US-run air base, in a new security alert. Ken McCallum, head of MI5, said the alleged plot to attack the base in September is not unique and reflects a broader strategy by Tehran to expand its attacks beyond traditional targets. The warning comes as MI5 claims Iran is increasing its focus on British military infrastructure.
The intelligence agency has identified a pattern of Iranian-linked activities aimed at UK military locations, including sabotage and arson. These attacks are said to target not only Iranian dissidents but also broader UK security interests. McCallum emphasized that the threat is evolving, with Iran seeking to intensify its presence in British territory through more sophisticated methods.
This follows a series of security incidents linked to Iran in the UK, including attacks on Jewish sites. MI5 has previously reported that such actions are part of a wider campaign by Iranian operatives to destabilize Western targets. The latest warning underscores growing concerns over the potential for more coordinated attacks against UK military installations. The agency is now urging increased vigilance and enhanced security measures across all military locations.
