The Western Trust area in Northern Ireland has recorded the highest rate of self-harm hospital presentations in the region, according to Mental Health Champion Professor Siobhan O’Neill. The data shows 355 cases per 100,000 people, a significant increase compared to other areas.
Professor O’Neill presented the findings at a special meeting of Derry City and Magherafelt District Council. She emphasized the need for targeted mental health interventions and increased support services. The figures highlight a growing public health concern, with self-harm incidents rising sharply in recent months.
The Western Trust covers parts of County Derry and has long faced challenges related to mental health. Previous reports have noted rising stress levels among residents, particularly in communities affected by economic hardship and social isolation. This latest data adds to concerns about the region’s mental health infrastructure and access to care. The situation underscores the importance of early intervention and community-based support programs.
