Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of attacking a power plant shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an "energy ceasefire" between Moscow and Kyiv. The attack occurred days following Trump’s public statement, which claimed Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt strikes on each other’s energy infrastructure.
Zelensky’s office confirmed that Russian forces struck a thermal power plant at least twice, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks damaged critical energy infrastructure, disrupting power supply in the region. Zelensky expressed frustration, stating the ceasefire announcement was "news to me," suggesting he was not informed of the deal.
The U.S. President had previously called on Ukraine to stop bombing Russian oil refineries, urging Kyiv to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelensky had rejected the request, insisting Moscow must first cease its own attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. Trump’s announcement came amid growing international criticism, including from UK Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused him of easing sanctions on Russian diesel and risking further aggression.
The energy ceasefire, announced by Trump in a brief social media post, was met with skepticism. No details were provided on its terms or enforcement mechanisms. Moscow did not immediately comment on the agreement. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with energy infrastructure remaining a key target in the conflict.
