During a recent governorship debate in Lagos, candidates from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties clashed over key development issues such as flooding, traffic, housing, and education. The debate highlighted differing visions for the state’s future, with opposition figures criticizing the APC government’s performance while the APC candidate, Bello Hamzat, defended current policies and outlined plans to expand infrastructure and social services.
The discussion focused on urgent challenges facing Lagos, including inadequate housing and worsening traffic congestion. Opposition candidates, representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the need for immediate action on housing shortages and improved public transportation. They argued that the APC’s current strategies have failed to address these issues effectively.
Hamzat, representing the APC, defended the government’s record, citing progress in infrastructure development and social service expansion. He outlined new initiatives aimed at increasing housing supply and improving road networks. However, opposition candidates countered that these efforts have not translated into tangible improvements for residents, particularly in densely populated areas.
This debate comes ahead of the 2027 governorship election, where multiple parties are vying for control of Lagos State. The discussion reflects growing public frustration with the current administration’s ability to manage the city’s rapid growth and associated challenges. As the election approaches, the debate on development priorities is likely to shape voter sentiment and political strategy.
